Giovanni Sample

1931 to 2014 · Dedicated by the Sample family

He began working the family land as a boy and never really stopped. He drove, he planted, he fed people. He crossed an ocean, built a life, and came home to the same valley every time he could. This biography is assembled from what his family wrote and recorded. The Memory Keeper organizes their words. It never invents them and never speaks as him.

Recorded memories

His voice, kept as it was.

Sample recording: "The milk route", told by his daughter Maria, 59 seconds.

This is a demonstration. The words and the voice were written and read for this example page, not recorded by a real family. On a family Legacy Page, the recording is theirs and the transcript beneath it is typed in their own words.

Transcript

He was twelve when he started on the milk route. Twelve. His uncle had the truck, and my father had the early mornings. Three o'clock, sometimes half past two in the summer, and he would walk down to where the truck was parked and wait for the engine to turn over.

They went farm to farm. The cans were taller than he was when he started, and he learned to roll them instead of lifting them, because a boy who tries to lift a full milk can only tries it once. Then down to the caseificio before the village was awake, and the men there would give him bread and a piece of cheese from the day before.

He told me once that the whole valley smelled like milk and diesel at that hour, and that he never smelled anything better in his life. He said it as a joke. But he was not joking.

He drove that route until he was sixteen. Every morning. And he never once said it was hard. He said, I was happy. Happy by name and happy by fact.

That was my father.
